It wasn’t long ago that Max Homa was one of the most prolific, and arguably best, pro golfers on social media. His favorite activity? Lighthearted and hilarious takedowns of swing videos.

But it was fan’s video of Homa’s swing that ultimately inspired the six-time Tour winner to end a lengthy absence from X.

Earlier this season, Homa disappeared from X, his preferred platform, to focus on his game. But at the BMW Championship last week he made his grand return. What specifically caused Homa to jump back into the volatile fray on the site formerly known as Twitter? Criticism from a fan over slow play

On Thursday afternoon during the opening round of the tournament, an X user posted a video of Homa, whom he called “the most unserious on tour,” claiming that Homa had taken more than 15 minutes to hit a shot.

By Thursday evening, we learned that while Homa doesn’t post much on X anymore, it appears he still reads the site. At 5:42 p.m. ET, Homa’s account sprung back to life in the form of a reply to the slow-play call-out.

With his trademark humor, Homa explained that the long wait to hit wasn’t his fault, but instead he had been waiting for a rules official to arrive to make a ruling, writing, “I was waiting on a rules official for 15 mins have a great day Matt keep up the awesome videos!”

Just a few minutes later, Homa posted an explanation for his lengthy absence from X, writing, “Hopped off Twitter a while back cuz I thought it might help my game. Boy was I wrong 😂 hoping tomorrow is the day it clicks. At the very least I’m finally going to grow an ass after walking Castle Pines this week.”

Homa has a point about his game. After breaking out in the 2022-23 season with two wins to finish 9th in FedEx Cup standings, his play took a downward turn in 2024.

This season he only managed three top-10s. A T33-finish at the BMW left Homa in 46th in FedEx standings, which means he won’t be teeing it up at this week’s Tour Championship.
