‘True embarassment’: LPGA pro falls into bunker while reading putt

February 16, 2019

LPGA Tour pro Bronte Law suffered what she called “any golfer’s worst nightmare” on Saturday when she was reading a putt — and fell into a bunker. The 23-year-old Brit was midway through her third round at the LPGA’s ISPS HANDA Australian Open when the incident occurred on the eighth hole, and she recounted her embarrassment afterwards on Twitter.

“So today I experienced any golfers worst nightmare… I fell back into a bunker while reading a putt. True embarrassment at its finest,” she tweeted.

Major credit goes to Law for embracing the good fun of the incident. But unfortunately, the tweet left followers with more questions than answers. Where did it happen? How?! Did she make the putt? And most importantly — is there video? Fellow LPGA pros were eager to chime in.

Law even teased that a camera had “possibly” captured the incident. But for now, no dice. Let it serve as a warning to you, dear readers: those bunkers can jump out of nowhere.

On Sunday, Law spoke to the LPGA in the video below, detailing the incident and revealing further details.

“I was just minding my own business, going through my pre-shot routine, lining up my putt and stepped back,” she said. “And as I stepped back with my left foot, it seemed to be sliding away from me very quickly… so that happened.

“It gave my partner a little bit of entertainment there, but it was unfortunate, yeah. I managed to at least make the putt. I know everyone was concerned whether I made the putt or not. I somehow held it together between crying laughing.

“My caddie really enjoyed that one, she added. “I don’t think I’m ever going to live that one down.”

Most importantly, the incident didn’t derail her round. Law balanced four birdies against two bogeys for a round of two-under 70 that got her to seven under for the tournament. She sits in a tie for 6th, five shots behind leader Nelly Korda, heading to the final round.
