Jason Day splits with caddie Steve Williams, citing ‘disconnect of old school and new school’

August 12, 2019

When Jason Day brought legendary caddie Steve Williams on as caddie earlier this summer, he had lofty expectations for the partnership. Now, they’re splitting up after just six events.

Evin Priest of the Australian AP was the first to report the Williams-Day fracture. Day missed the cut by a single shot at this week’s Northern Trust Open.

“Parting with Steve was a mutual decision and not an easy one to make,” Day told the Australian AP on Sunday, citing respect for his approach and his accomplishments. But he also implied the two brought different approaches to the course.

“It was a disconnect of old school and new school,” he said. “Steve has become a friend and I have a lot of respect for him. I thank Steve for everything he taught me.”

Day had always emphasized that Williams was only interested in working for a winner, and the two managed just one top-10 together. Still, the split was surprising given the long-term view they’d emphasized early on.

“I’ve got a lot of work to do,” Day said at the Travelers Championship in July. “Like we say, we’re focusing on trying to win this year, but definitely trying to project and look forward to 2020.”

Priest reports that Day’s friend (and former PGA Tour player) David Lutterus will be on his bag for this week’s BMW Championship.
