James Hahn’s putting performance at Riviera Country Club won him his first PGA Tour event, the Northern Trust Open, in a playoff over Dustin Johnson and Paul Casey.
The 33-year-old acknowledged as much in his press conference Sunday, saying that after his third round Saturday, he talked himself into a good putting performance ahead of the final round.
“I just told myself, ‘I will putt great tomorrow. I will putt great tomorrow.’ And I just kept saying that,” Hahn said. “I was watching The Matrix yesterday and in between commercials I just kind of closed my eyes and I was like, ‘I’m going to putt great tomorrow, I will putt great tomorrow.’”
So if you’re looking for the secret to great putting, there it is.
Hahn needed only 22 putts during Sunday’s final round when he shot two-under 69. He took only four putts over the three-hole playoff, including a 10-foot birdie putt at the par-4 10th, and the game-winner, a 25-footer for birdie at the par-3 14th.
Hahn used an Odyssey White Hot Pro 2-Ball. He finished the event T10 in total putts with 107 (not including the playoff). Here’s a look at Hahn and his putter. The 2-Ball model has sold more 5 million models since its debut.
