The International team faced long odds at the start of Day 3 at the 2022 Presidents Cup, but they finally started to show some fight Saturday morning at Quail Hollow, and just in time to make things interesting.
Or at least to ensure that meaningful golf will be played on Sunday.
Beginning the day trailing a dominant U.S. team 8-2, the Internationals had a near-impossible task to get back into the tournament. But with 20 points up for grabs, they still had a chance but needed a strong start on Saturday. And they got it.
In the morning foursomes session, they won two of the four matches to double their total points. Heading into Saturday afternoon’s fourballs session, the Americans lead 10-4.
While the International team still has a daunting challenge ahead of them, its Saturday morning play at least helped them to avoid losing the Cup outright on Saturday, and it gives them a fighting chance to comeback on Sunday.
Here are the final results from each Saturday morning foursomes match:
Jordan Spieth/Justin Thomas (USA) def. Sungjae Im/Corey Conners (INT) – 4 and 3
Adam Scott/Hideki Matsuyama (INT) def. Cameron Young/Collin Morikawa (USA) – 3 and 2
K.H. Lee/Tom Kim (INT) def. Scottie Scheffler/Sam Burns (USA) – 2 and 1
Tony Finau/Max Homa (USA) def. Si Woo Kim/Cam Davis (INT) – 4 and 3
