Finally, golf is back. On Sunday, four PGA Tour stars (Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson, Rickie Fowler and Matthew Wolff) head to Seminole Golf Club to participate in the TaylorMade Driving Relief charity match.
The skins match marks the first live televised golf since March 12, pitting Rory McIlroy and Dustin Johnson up against Rickie Fowler and Matthew Wolff. The teams will compete toward a total prize pool of $3 million, with each hole worth an increasing dollar amount.
All proceeds will be donated to charity. Team McIlroy-Johnson will compete for the American Nurses Foundation and team Fowler-Wolff for the CDC Foundation’s Covid-19 Response Fund.
While the faces will be familiar, the golf will look different. Players will practice safe social distancing measures on the course, carry their own tour bags and play without rakes in bunkers. They will also be permitted to wear shorts and use rangefinders during competition.
Even the venue, Seminole Golf Club (No. 34 on GOLF’s Top 100 Courses list), is new for fans. Seminole is one of the most exclusive private clubs in the world (Tom Brady recently joined as a member), known for its fabled pro-member tournament which routinely draws many of golf’s biggest names.
The entire event will be broadcast on NBC. As part of the network’s coverage of the event, each player will be fitted with a microphone to allow fans to listen in on the action in real-time.
