Here’s how Brooks Koepka locked up nearly $5 million (!) with his win on Sunday

July 29, 2019

Brooks Koepka was bogey-free and took all the drama out of what was supposed to be a star-studded final pairing at the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational on Sunday.

Koepka opened the day trailing Rory McIlroy by one but shot 65 in what was a pretty easy cruise to the finish line. World Golf Championships offer big payouts, but Koepka made bank on Sunday.

He earned $1.745 million for his victory alone, but he also locked up the $2 million bonus that comes with winning the inaugural Wyndham Rewards race, which was put in this year to pay out $10 million ($2 million to the winner) for the Tour’s season-long points race. Next week’s Wyndham Championship is the regular-season finale and will finalize the top 10 for the extra cash, but Koepka, who isn’t in the field, already has the top spot secured.

And lastly, Koepka has all but secured the brand new Aon Risk-Reward Challenge, which offers a $1 million payout for a PGA Tour and LPGA player. The competition uses a scoring system to reward aggressive and well-executed play through the course of the year.

Dustin Johnson, Jason Day and Koepka were tied for the Aon Risk-Reward Challenge entering Memphis, but Day and Koepka both played the par-5 16th in two under and remained tied. Koepka, however, won the tiebreaker, which only counts tournaments both he and Day entered. While Alex Noren could still win with a miracle performance at the Wyndham Championship next week (Day, Koepka and Johnson aren’t in the field), it will be nearly impossible for Koepka to be topped.

“I’m sure I can find a way to spend it,” Koepka said. “It’s incredible to look at what I’ve done this year. Just shows consistency, trying to take my game to a new level, and I’ve done that.”

So, to recap, that’s payouts of $1.745 million, $2 million and $1 million. Not a bad day for Koepka — and he still has the lucrative FedEx Cup Playoffs remaining to add to it.

“The year’s not done,” Koepka said. “I still got a few more things to finish off and hopefully it will go my way.”
