After a wild Friday at Riviera, the weekend started without much drama. With Tiger Woods gone, and other big names out of contention, it gave the GOLF.com team a perfect opportunity to kick their feet back and relax — literally.
First, my colleague Sean Zak checked out the player performance and got a peek at how golfers take care of their bodies each week. After that, I went down to the the caddie recovery center, complete with plenty of tech to make sure the loopers stay healthy.
Inside Genesis Invitational Day 4: Tiger’s mysterious WD and Jordan Spieth’s costly error
Patrick Cantlay continued his stellar play on Saturday, posting a one-under 70 to take a one-shot lead heading into the final round, while his best buddy Xander Schauffele posted a 65 of his own to get into the final pairing.
“There’s just gonna have to be a certain amount of self belief that has to go in,” Schauffele said. “If I can just keep doing what I’m doing and keep some pressure on Pat, or whoever is gonna be in that group, that’s the most important thing.”
On Sunday, the show belonged to Hideki Matsuyama. As Cantlay and Schauffele struggled in the final pairing, the 2021 Masters champion made an epic Sunday charge. Matsuyama posted nine birdies — including an epic stretch from 15 to 17 — to post a final-round 62 and take the title by three strokes. With the win, he became the winningest Asian-born player in PGA Tour history.
