Charles Howell III extends his lead, and other things you missed from Round 2 of the RSM Classic

November 16, 2018

If you want to make the cut at Sea Island, you have to go low. 78 players were at two under par or better at the tournament’s halfway point, and will continue chasing Charles Howell III’s lead though the weekend.
Here’s what you missed from Round 2 of the RSM Classic.

Charles Howell III extended his lead

For anyone feeling skeptical of Howell III’s first-round lead on the heels of an eight-birdie-zero-bogey 64, Howell III doubled down on Friday with another impressive bogey-free round of six-under 64 (the Seaside course is a par 70).

Though it’s been over 11 years since Howell III’s last victory, he now has three shots between himself and his nearest competitors, Jason Gore and Cameron Champ, who are tied for second at 11 under par.

Sponsor’s invite Jason Gore shot 63

Self-proclaimed retired golfer Jason Gore is playing this week on a sponsor’s invite — and he may want to re-think those retirement ideas.
After rounds of 68-63, Gore is only three shots behind Howell III.

The 44-year-old Tour veteran has been playing both the Web.com Tour and select PGA Tour events over the past several years. He hasn’t made a cut on the PGA Tour since the 2017 Quicken Loans National, when he finished T13.
Gore’s lone Tour victory was the 2005 85 Lumber Classic.

Cameron Champ is back in the mix — again!

Eight birdies and a single bogey powered Champ up the leaderboard into contention, just three shots behind Howell III.

It’s becoming a familiar storyline for the Tour rookie, who has finished in the top 28 in all four of his events this season — including a win at the Sanderson Farms Open.
No matter what happens this weekend, one thing is for sure: the guy is not afraid to go low.

Nick Watney posted the round of the day

Seven birdies and an eagle at the Plantation course highlighted Nick Watney’s scorecard, and his score of eight-under-par 64 was the best round on either course.
The 37-year-old Watney is seeking his first win since the 2012 Barclays. He’s currently five shots behind Howell III’s lead.
