Drew Nesbitt undresses for hero shot, makes cut on number at Honda Classic

March 2, 2019

Whatever you have to do to make the cut, do it. That was Drew Nesbitt’s motto Friday afternoon at the Honda Classic.

Nesbitt was staring down a potential missed cut as his tee shot on the par-4 6th hole (his 15th of the day) dropped into the water near the edge of the hazard at PGA National. The young Canadian was hovering at even par, playing just the second PGA Tour event of his career. What was he going to do, just accept a penalty and grind even harder to make the cut? Nope.

Nesbitt did what any desperate player has ever dreamed of. He took off his shirt, rolled up his pants, established a stance on the shore and swing hard at the half-submerged ball. Yes, he also boasted an incredible farmers tan.

The shot from the shoreline was somehow not even the most impressive part of that hole. From 50 yards out on his third shot, Nesbitt tossed in a nice little wedge to just four feet, making the par put to stave off the cutline. He would end up making the cut on the number just a few holes later — the first cut of his PGA Tour career, mind you — making the entire episode well worth it.

Of course, he is hardly the first player we’ve seen make a watery attempt at keeping their round together, but perhaps he took the strongest lash at the ball. Henrik Stenson is impressed.
