An icon in sports and golf writing, Dan Jenkins passed away Thursday at age 89.

Jenkins has long been heralded as one of the greatest golf writers ever, spending much of his career penning stories for Sports Illustrated and Golf Digest, and doing so long after many others would have retired. Just last year, Jenkins was on hand at Augusta as Patrick Reed won the green jacket at the Masters.

Born in December, 1929, Jenkins amassed a career of more than 60 years of major golf coverage, witnessing all kinds of champions, from Ben Hogan to Jordan Spieth. In 2012, he was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame. He is also a member of the National Sportscasters and Sports Writers Hall of Fame. His 10 Golf Writers Association of America awards are tied for the most ever.

Jenkins lived for much of his life in the Fort Worth area, a proud alumnus of TCU. The press box at TCU’s football stadium, Amon G. Carter Stadium, is named after Jenkins.

Jenkins is survived by wife June, sons Danny and Marty and daughter Sally. You can find some of his best work in the Sports Illustrated Vault here.
