Brooks Koepka looks to take down the title and the World No. 1 ranking as he takes to the final round of the CJ Cup with a four-shot lead.
Staged on Jeju Island in South Korea, the CJ Cup has been headlined by World No. 3 Brooks Koepka and No. 4 Justin Thomas, who were paired together the first two rounds. Thomas is the defending champion of the event, while Koepka was recently named PGA Tour Player of the Year for 2017-18, no surprise after his wins at the U.S. Open and PGA Championship.
Koepka got the better of the pairing over the first three days, going low his second and third rounds to post 13 under heading to Sunday.
Englishman Ian Poulter has gotten one shot better each day in Korea, shooting 70 Thursday, 69 Friday and four-under 68 on Saturday to climb into second place at nine under. He’ll hope to spoil Koepka’s coronation.
Koepka certainly isn’t known to crack under Sunday pressure, but there’s a strong contingent of Tour players who will try to track him down. Scott Piercy ditched his head-turning cold-weather cap from the first two rounds but needed a holed bunker shot at 17 and birdie at 18 to manage even-par 72. He joins Poulter in second place, four shots back.
Rafa Cabrera Bello leads the group at eight under after a third-round 65, tied for the low score of the day. Cameron Smith, Jamie Lovemark, Pat Perez, Gary Woodland and Chez Reavie also share fourth place.
At last year’s event, Thomas defeated Leishman with a birdie on the second hole of sudden death to capture the title.
