Things got more than a little heated at a recent golf club championship ceremony, when one player violently attacked another over cheating accusations. The bar fight turned into a viral video, and now the golf club is apologizing for the “unfortunate situation.”
It all went down at Lake Club Benoni in South Africa, where a man publicly called his competitor a cheat. In a video that captured the moment, the accused races across the bar and head-butts the man, setting off a brief brawl.
The video of the incident quickly went viral, shooting around the golf world via social media. Fearing its good name would be tarnished, the club released a statement apologizing to members for the embarrassing fight, according to website sport24.
In the statement, the author’s note said they “do not accept nor condone any such behaviour” and assured members that “the situation will be dealt with both fairly and promptly.”
They even specifically cite the fact that the video of the “once off incident” had gone viral, while stating that the bar fight “is not indicative of the fellowship we have at our club.”
Here’s the club’s entire statement to the membership:
On behalf of Lake Club we duly apologise for the unfortunate situation that happened during our Club championship prize giving yesterday. Please note that we do not accept nor condone any such behaviour as we have obligation to provide a safe and enjoyable experience for all our members and guests. It is very unfortunate that the video has gone Viral as this is a once off incident and is not indicative of the fellowship we have at our club.
Urgent meetings to discuss the way forward have already taken place and we can assure you that the situation will be dealt with both fairly and promptly. We request your patience in the meanwhile. We will ensure that a communication will follow once the relevant Sanctions have been imposed.

Of course, this isn’t the first time a golf club fight has made the news. Last August, a man bit off the finger of another golfer during a brawl at a Massachusetts golf club. In a different incident last year, police on golf carts broke up a violent altercation over slow play.
