Featured tee time for Round 3
It’s been nearly four years since Cameron Champ has found himself in the winner’s circle on the PGA Tour, but the 29-year-old is in an enviable position at the top of the leaderboard heading into the weekend at the RBC Canadian Open.
Champ followed up an opening round of 62 with a 66 on Friday, brining him to 12 under par overall and giving him a two-shot lead over his closest competitor, Andrew Putnam (-10).
After notching three PGA Tour wins between 2018 and 2021, Champ’s form has suffered in recent years. He lost his PGA Tour card last year and was the eighth alternate in this week’s RBC Canadian Open field. When he got the call, he arrived in Toronto with only one day to prepare.
“The last couple years for me, it’s mostly been off the course stuff. It’s been a little rough for me to even be out here,” Champ said on Friday. “I just finally kind of accepted that and finally got some help and slowly working towards that, which has been nice.
“Again, for me it’s just a refresher to kind of be free in a sense, to feel somewhat of a freedom. I could care less what I shoot,” he continued. “Really, like I said, going through all this and looking back, the result is really not what was bugging me. These last two days was just a nice — not sigh of relief, but it was just a joy for me to be able to play like that. I know it’s there. I just have to get out of my own way and keep
progressing.”

In the second round of the 2025 RBC Canadian Open, Cameron Champ makes birdie on the par-5 18th hole.
Champ will tee off in Saturday afternoon’s final pairing alongside Putnam at 1:50 p.m. ET.
