Four million bucks. FedEx Cup points. Admiration. Hideki Matsuyama’s haul for winning last year’s Genesis Invitational was as sweet as his swing.
But he left wanting.
He didn’t get a pic with the tournament host. Tiger Woods was gone.
No doubt it’s a perk for a generation that grew up watching the 15-time major winner. But last year, Woods withdrew during second-round play due to illness — and Matsuyama became inspired.
Maybe he’d win this year’s Genesis, moved to Torrey Pines due to the wildfires in Los Angeles.
Maybe Woods would show up.
Maybe Matsuyama would get his photo.
“Obviously I’m looking forward to defending my title this week,” Matsuyama said earlier this week through a translator, “and I’ve heard some rumor that Tiger might be here this Sunday, so hopefully I get that trophy and get that picture with him this week.”
With that, here are the money payouts for the Genesis Invitational. The total purse is $20 million.
