Major season begins this week with the 2024 Masters at Augusta National, and we’re picking a winless pro who finished runner-up last week as our long shot to win. Here’s our pick, the Masters odds, betting favorites and everything else you need to know.
Masters odds: Long-shot bet
For the first men’s major of the year, we’re picking Denny McCarthy as our long shot to win. McCarthy comes in to Masters week with +10000 odds to win, but there are a few reasons we think he has an outside shot to shock the world.
On Sunday at the Valero Texas Open, McCarthy put on a clinic in the final round, making birdie on eight of his final nine holes to shoot 63 and force a playoff with Akshay Bhatia.
McCarthy was udnone when a distraction led to a water ball on the first playoff hole, adding another chapter to his growing book of near-misses. But the key to McCarthy’s fine play was otherworldly putting, something that is essential to winning at Augusta.
Is it likely a Masters rookie captures his first PGA Tour win at Augusta National? No, but McCarthy is long overdue, and he will have extra fire in his belly after last week’s disappointment.
If you risk $10 on McCarthy to win the green jacket and he does, you’ll earn $1,000. For insurance, consider placing additional small bets on McCarthy to finish top 10 and top 20.
Looking for more long-shot bets for the Masters? Our honorable mentions this week are Brian Harman (+6600) and Corey Conners (+6600).
