2023 Ryder Cup schedule: Daily format, start times, rosters, how it works

The 2023 Ryder Cup kicks off Friday at Marco Simone Golf Club outside of Rome, where the U.S. team will try to win on European soil for the first time in 30 years. Here’s everything you need to know about the event, including the daily format, full rosters, start times, the TV schedule and more.

Ryder Cup preview

For decades, the Ryder Cup was a story of European dominance. But things have changed recently. The Americans are the defending champions, and they’ve won two of the last three Ryder Cups.

But both of those wins, in 2021 at Whistling Straits and 2016 at Hazeltine, were contested in the United States. The last time the Americans won the Ryder Cup in Europe? All the way back in 1993 at The Belfry.

Now the U.S. team, anchored by World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, will take on a fearsome European squad starring Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm in an attempt to claim a victory across the pond at first-time host course Marco Simone Golf Club.

Ryder Cup format

The 2023 Ryder Cup will be contested across three days of competition. For Day 1 on Friday, Sept. 29, there will be four foursomes matches and four four-ball matches, all featuring two players from each team.

In foursomes, or alternate shot, teammates play one ball and alternate who hits each shot. In four-ball, all four players play their own ball, with the lowest score per team counting for each hole.

The second day of competition on Saturday will also feature eight matches in total across two sessions, foursomes and fourballs.

Then for the finale on Sunday, all 24 players will compete in 12 singles matches to determine the champion.

One point is up for grabs in each match, with a half-point going to each team in the event of a tie. Twenty-eight points will be doled out in total, with the American team needing to reach 14 to retain the Cup because they are the defending champions. The European team will need to reach 14.5 points to win.
