Welcome to ‘That’s Debatable,’ where our staffers clash over golf’s ultimate 19th-hole disputes

April 6, 2020

Are you and your friends constantly debating whether Caddyshack or Tin Cup is the most iconic golf movie ever? Or how about if mulligans are acceptable? Or maybe your most fiery argument is about whether poker chip ball markers are a scourge on the game?

You aren’t alone. These controversial golfy topics have long made their way into 19th-hole and water-cooler debates and defending one side is half the fun. So, that’s what we’re doing on GOLF.com beginning this week. Welcome to, That’s Debatable, presented by Cisco.

We seeded 16 GOLF staffers, created a bracket and assigned a hard-hitting golf topic for each matchup. Our staffers will have a chance to defend their stances on camera, with GOLF senior editor Sean Zak serving as the tournament referee and awarding points and, eventually, a winner in each matchup. The winners move on to face a new opponent and a new debate topic until the ultimate That’s Debatable champion is crowned later this month.

Want to follow along? We’ll broadcast one matchup every weekday at noon ET on Twitter, beginning today (April 6) with one of our eight first-round clashes. The opening battle pits our top seed, senior writer Alan Shipnuck, take on No. 16 seed and one of our newest GOLF staffers, assistant editor James Colgan.

But we want to hear from you, too. Who do you think won each debate? Whose points hit and whose missed? Did our moderator advance the right debater to the next round? We’re encouraging you to comment and let us know where you stand. So tune in every weekday and join the fun, and we’ll see you for a final time on April 24, when we crown our That’s Debatable grand champion.
