Bryson DeChambeau surges into lead in Mexico with second-round 63

Saturday’s third round has traditionally been the PGA Tour’s Moving Day, but at the WGC-Mexico Championship, played at the Club de Golf Chapultepec outside of Mexico City, the tournament’s top performers made Friday’s second- round leaderboard bleed red.

Here’s everything you missed from the Round 2 action south of the border.

Bryson DeChambeau leads by one

After a first-round 68, DeChambeau lit up the second round with a total of nine birdies to sign for a round of eight-under-par 63, bringing him to 11 under par overall.

Incredibly, DeChambeau’s round wasn’t even the lowest of the day. South African Erik van Rooyen fired a nine-under-par 62 to take that honor, and Patrick Reed matched DeChambeau with his own round of 63. Van Rooyen and Reed trail DeChambeau by one shot at the tournament’s halfway point.

DeChambeau is seeking his sixth career Tour victory, and first WGC.

What happened to Rory?

There’s no doubt that McIlroy is still in it, but after heading into the second round leading by two shots, he now has significant ground to make up. His four birdies on Friday were neutralized by two bogeys, and his round of two-under-par 69 dropped him five spots down the leaderboard into solo sixth, three shots behind DeChambeau’s lead.

Who else is in the mix?

In addition to the players mentioned above, there’s also Hideki Matsuyama and Justin Thomas, who are at nine under par overall.

After Rory at eight under par, there are three players at five under par (Sebastian Munoz, Paul Casey and Tyrrell Hatton) — who are T7 and six shots behind DeChambeau’s lead.
