Here’s what you missed from Round 3 of the Hero World Challenge

December 7, 2019

Tiger Woods continued his climb up the leaderboard at the Hero World Challenge on Friday, and is within striking distance heading into the final round.

Here’s everything you missed from the third-round action in the Bahamas.

Gary Woodland leads

Three straight sub-70 rounds have launched Gary Woodland to the top of the tournament leaderboard at 13 under par overall. Though none of his rounds have been perfect — he’s made six total bogeys — he’s amassed an impressive number of birdies over 54 holes, with a total tally of 19.

The reigning U.S. Open champ has four PGA Tour wins on his resume, and was named as one of Tiger Woods’ captain’s picks for next week’s Presidents Cup in Melbourne, Australia.

Tiger Woods is only two shots back

For the second day in a row, the Big Cat managed to tie the low round of the day. On Thursday, that number was six-under-par 66, and it was matched by two others. On Friday, it was five-under-par 67, and matched only by Justin Thomas.

Woods’ third round included six birdies and only one bogey.

Woods is now only two shots behind tournament leader Gary Woodland, who is 13 under par overall, and leads Henrik Stenson, who is in solo second, by one shot.

If Woods can get the job done on Saturday, it will mark the his sixth career victory at the Hero — and his first since 2011.

Patrick Reed was penalized

Second-round leader Patrick Reed had a three-shot lead heading into Friday’s round, but a two-shot penalty for improving his intended line of play proved costly, turning a bogey on the par-5 11th into a a triple.

Reed blamed the penalty on the camera angle he was shown in the scoring tent after his round, but ultimately accepted it.

“I think with a different camera angle they would have realized that if it was from the side you would have seen that with the backswing it was not improving the lie because it was far enough away from the golf ball,” Reed said. “But after seeing that camera angle, because it brushed the sand it was a penalty.”

Reed dropped five spots down the leaderboard into 6th, three shots behind Woodland’s lead.

Who else is in the hunt?

Justin Thomas and Jon Rahm are tied with Woods in T3 at 11 under par overall. Reed is also right there, at 10 under par overall and three back. After that, Chez Reavie, Rickie Fowler and Justin Rose are six under par overall and seven shots back.
