Here’s what you missed from Round 3 of the Travelers Championship

June 23, 2019

The third round of the Travelers Championship is in the books, and Chez Reavie has opened up a gap on the field at TPC River Highlands.

Here’s everything you need to know from Saturday’s action in Cromwell, Conn.

The leader: Chez Reavie played his first seven holes in a pedestrian 1-over par on Saturday — and then something changed dramatically. Reavie birdied No. 8 and then birdied seven holes on the back nine to post a 7-under 63, low round of the day, to take a massive six-stroke lead heading to Sunday.

“Tomorrow I’ll be nervous, just as I was nervous today and nervous last week [at the U.S. Open]” Reavie said after his round. He also mentioned wanting to shoot “5- or 6-under tomorrow.” Yeah, that should do it.

The contenders: The craziest part of Reavie’s six-shot lead? The fact that he was trailing by six shots at the turn. Reavie came home in 7-under, while the leader at the time, Zack Sucher, stumbled around the turn and came home in 5-over 40.

Now, Sucher is trailing by six, tied with Keegan Bradley at 10 under par. Roberto Diaz and Jason Day sit one shot further back at 9 under, and four more players — Bryson DeChambeau, Kevin Tway, Tommy Fleetwood and Martin Laird — are at 8 under. At the moment, it may feel like they’re playing for second place, but if Saturday taught us anything it’s just how quickly things can turn at TPC River Highlands.

Shot of the day: How about this one from Justin Thomas at No. 9?! We’re a little worried about exactly how far past this ball would have rolled, but JT gets extra points for style.

Quote of the day: Jason Day has been insightful, open and honest about his relationship with new caddie Steve Williams, and that continued after his round on Saturday.

“Don’t get me wrong, Steve is very intense. It’s nice to have a caddie that can obviously have the credentials he has but also point me in the right direction knowing that he’s 100% confident in himself,” he said.

“That actually brings my confidence up. He’s caddied for a lot of great players. Obviously Tiger and Adam, to name a few. But I’m looking forward to tomorrow. I know that we’re still learning and we’re trying to understand each other’s – the way he caddies, the way I play. It’s going to be interesting tomorrow to see how we gel together.”

Bradley and Reavie tee off in the final pairing on Sunday.
