U.S. Open 2019: Fans serenade birthday-boy Phil Mickelson on the range Sunday at Pebble Beach
This Sunday is not just the final round of the 2019 U.S. Open and Father’s Day. It’s also Phil Mickelson’s birthday, and the fans at Pebble Beach showed their appreciation by serenading Lefty on Sunday morning.
Mickelson turns 49 years old today, and though he’s still never won a U.S. Open, the fans love him all the same. As Phil arrived on the range to prepare for the final round, a large group of spectators watching him broke into song, singing the familiar “Happy Birthday” tune to the five-time major champ.

A big smile quickly broke across Phil’s face as the singing began, and he offered the crowd a wave once they finished before returning his focus to the work at hand.
Mickelson, whose six runner-up finishes at the U.S. Open are an all-time record, won’t break through at this year’s tournament. He began the final round at three over, a distant 14 shots behind leader Gary Woodland.

That elusive victory will have to wait until his 50th birthday at Winged Foot next year, but there are worse ways to spend your birthday than a morning round at Pebble Beach Golf Links.
