WATCH: Olympic curling champion uses gold medal to mark ball at Pro-Am

June 8, 2019

A lot of strange items get used as ball makers on the golf course, especially during casual rounds at a local muni. The pros sometimes use objects that have meaning to them, but they’re always small, flat and practical. But practical was going to cut it for U.S. Olympic gold medal curler Matt Hamilton.

Hamilton is playing the Web.com Tour’s BMW Charity Pro-Am in South Carolina this week. Hamilton was part of the U.S. Men’s Curling team that shocked the world by winning gold at the 2018 Olympics in PyeongChang. Naturally, Hamilton brought his gold medal along to show off at the tournament, but it’s what he did with it that’s turning heads.

On Friday, Hamilton had a short putt left at one point during his round that required a mark. Instead of using a normal ball marker or a coin, Hamilton reached into his pocket and pulled out his gold medal, then proceeded to lay it down behind his ball, saying, “Go ahead and just give it one more good mark there.”

Fortunately cameras caught the moment, which you can watch below.

Hamilton kept a straight face throughout the bit, but the same can’t be said for his playing partners, who looked perplexed when Hamilton gave them fist-bumps after marking his ball.

As it turns out, this isn’t the first time Hamilton pulled his gold medal move. He did it at last year’s BMW Charity Pro-Am, too.

The field at this year’s BMW Charity Pro-Am, which is held jointly at Thornblade Club and The Cliffs Valley, also features former NFL star Brett Favre, former MLB star Pudge Rodríguez, and actor Brian Baumgartner (better known as “Kevin” in The Office, among others.

The tournament continues with the third round on Saturday afternoon, with or without any gold medals.
