The PGA Tour rolls on to Quail Hollow Club for the Wells Fargo Championship this week. It’s a popular tune-up venue for the upcoming PGA Championship at Bethpage Black in less than two weeks, and the field is stacked but for one notable missing name: Tiger Woods.
The news broke last week that the Big Cat won’t be teeing it up in North Carolina and will instead roll straight from his historic Masters win to Bethpage Black on Long Island, the site of his 2002 U.S. Open victory.
But there are plenty of other names to keep an eye on. Rory McIlroy has had lots of success at Quail Hollow, winning in both 2010 and 2015. Other former champions on site this week include Rickie Fowler (2012) and defending champion Jason Day. Justin Rose, Phil Mickelson and Sergio Garcia are also competing.
McIlroy is grouped with Garcia and Tony Finau for the first two rounds. The threesome goes off at 12:50 p.m. ET off tee No. 1 on Thursday. Other notable groups include Fowler, Rose and Webb Simpson at 12:40 p.m. ET off tee No. 1 and Mickelson, Day and Harold Varner III at 7:40 a.m. ET off tee No. 10.
Day looks to defend his title at the Wells Fargo Championship. Last year, Day persevered through a difficult final round to claim his 12th career Tour title by two shots over Nick Watney and Aaron Wise.
