Fantasy Six Pack: Get these players in your lineup at the Sentry Tournament of Champions

January 2, 2019

Welcome to the Fantasy Six Pack! If this is your first time joining us, here we highlight six golfers to use in two popular fantasy golf platforms, DraftKings and FanDuel. On each, you must select six golfers for your lineup under a specific salary cap. (DraftKings $50,000, FanDuel $60,000.) A little about me: I’m a golf nut with a 1.3 handicap and a nose for analytics — according to Rotogrinders, I’m one of the top daily fantasy golf players and ranked inside the top 25 of all players. Come check out all of my analysis over at Awesemo.com.

The Tournament: Sentry Tournament of Champions
Course: Plantation Course at Kapalua
Average Winning Score: -18
Average Cut: None
Yardage: 7,400 yards
Par: 73

Last year’s top finishers

Dustin Johnson
Jon Rahm
Brian Harman
Pat Perez

Skills emphasized: The key stat this week is strokes gained off the tee. Although the greens are undulating and the fairway complexes will make some second shots trickier than others, the scoring holes are set up to favor long hitters. Remember last year on Sunday DJ hit an incredible 431-yard drive on 12 that almost dropped for an ace. He’s got an advantage here. Speaking of which…

Dustin Johnson, practice round, 2019 Sentry Tournament of Champions
Dustin Johnson enters Kapalua as the defending champion.

The Favorites:

Dustin Johnson (Odds: 5/1, DraftKings $11,000, FanDuel $12,000) DJ enters as the odds-on favorite for most betting sites, even with top-ranked Brooks Koepka also in the field. Koepka is also a tempting pick, but now DJ is my first choice from the top tier.

Going Streaking: Players entering this week in the great form

Jon Rahm (Odds: 8/1, DraftKings $9,800, FanDuel $10,500) After his early ’18 win at the CareerBuilder, Rahm drifted for a bit. But he had a resurgence through the Ryder Cup and fall circuit, capping his year with a win at the Hero World Challenge. Last year his par-5 dominance propelled him to a runner-up finish in his first TOC. He’s one of the favorites but comes at a reduced salary. He needs to be a part of your lineups this week.

Bryson DeChambeau (Odds: 12/1, DraftKings $8,700, FanDuel $10,900) What a breakout he had last year. He won four times in his last 14 starts, and he’s shown the ability to close out tournaments. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him reach No. 1 in the world by year’s end. He finished 26th at Kapalua last year, but that was before he found his groove. I’d be willing to place a large bet that he betters that finish this week and at this salary he’s hard to ignore.

Patton Kizzire (Odds: 150/1, DraftKings $6,200, FanDuel $7,600) Kizzire is here thanks to his win at the Sony Open, but after that, he kind of fell off the face of the earth while missing seven of his next 12 cuts. But he’s nabbed three top-25s in his last five starts, which is a better stretch than most of his counterparts around the same price. My favorite budget pick this week.

Mulligans: A player who has struggled but expects to play better

Satoshi Kodaira (Odds: 11/1, DraftKings $6,000, FanDuel $7,000) Another player who endured a rough patch last year. After winning the RBC Heritage, Kodaira missed 11 of his next 15 cuts. But things may be turning around for this 31-year-old, as he won in Japan a month ago.
