Rory McIlroy captured his fourth victory this season at the WGC-HSBC Champions in rather tense fashion — somewhat surprisingly so. Rory didn’t make bogey in his final 39 holes and hadn’t shot a round worse than 68 all week. But Xander Schauffele almost caught him anyway.
Schauffele, who was recovering from the flu all week, matched his opening round 66 with a birdie on his final hole to force a playoff with the World No. 2.
But in the playoff, Rory rose above.
It started with a hammered drive down the 18th fairway.
Xander had to lay up, which opened the door for Rory — which he walked through emphatically.
That birdie settled the tournament and earned Rory his third WGC win. After the playoff, Xander lavished praised on Rory:
“Rory, he’s an elite player. when he’s on, I’d say he’s arguably the best player in the world.”
