2019 Walker Cup: Team USA and Team GB&I tied 2-2 after Saturday morning foursomes

September 7, 2019

The 2019 Walker Cup at Royal Liverpool in Hoylake, England, is underway, and after the Saturday morning foursomes session, the teams appear to be equally matched, heading into the afternoon singles in a 2-2 deadlock. In an interesting coincidence, each of the four Saturday morning foursomes matches ended 2&1.

Team USA’s John Augenstein and Andy Ogletree fell to GB&I’s Alex Fitzpatrick and Conor Purcell in the first match, while Americans John Pak and Isaiah Salinda triumphed over GB&I’s Sandy Scott and Euan Walker in the second match.

Harry Hall and Conor Gough of GB&I defeated Americans Stewart Hagestad and Akshay Bhatia in the third match, while GB&I’s Tom Sloman and Thomas Plumb fell to Americans Brandon Wu and Alex Smalley in the fourth match.

There are eight points up for grabs during Saturday afternoon’s singles session. Team USA is sending out a nearly identical lineup, subbing only two players: Cole Hammer and Steven Fisk will be playing instead of Hagestad and Bhatia.

Team USA has a 36-9-1 advantage over the course of the Walker Cup’s history, but has not won overseas since 2007 at Royal County Down in Northern Ireland.
