Ahhh, next week begins one of the most glorious parts of the professional golf calendar:
Links golf season!
The two-week stretch of the PGA Tour calendar that sees the best players in the world get creative and face the elements at the Scottish and Open Championships not only asks that they play a different game than in the States, but also that they set up their bag differently.
On this week’s episode of GOLF’s Fully Equipped, Max Greyserman, one of the PGA Tour’s biggest gear heads, explained to Johnny Wunder what kinds of changes he makes before he heads overseas.
“Last year, I tried a 1-iron in Europe,” Greyserman said. “16 [degrees], UT Callaway, Blue Ventus shaft. It was really good, kept it under the wind.”

Before you re-read that sentence, yes, Greyserman gamed a 1-iron at the Scottish Open last season, but don’t worry, this wasn’t your grandfather’s 1-iron. The Callaway Apex UT that Greyserman called upon is more forgiving than the blade 1-irons of the 70s, but at 16 degrees of loft, it’s still a club not for those of a faint heart.
Still, there was an issue with the club, it was a one-trick pony.
“It was low and far. So I couldn’t really work that club,” Greyserman said. “So it was great off the tee, but it only carried 240 and rolled to 300. I didn’t think it was that useful of a club, even though I thought it could be very useful over there.”
Greyserman is also an avid mini driver user and said that club is also particularly useful in links golf because he can flight it down and he doesn’t need a 3-wood to hit and hold a green. If he’s using the mini driver off the deck, he can run it up to the green.
