After a week of staring at the oceanfront vistas of Pebble Beach, the PGA Tour heads east to the drier (and rowdier) WM Phoenix Open.
Scottie Scheffler is the runaway betting favorite, with Fanatics Sportsbook setting his odds to win at +280. Second on that list is Justin Thomas at +1400. Even Scheffler’s odds to top 10 are absurd: -280.
On the latest episode of GOLF’s Subpar podcast, co-hosts Colt Knost and Drew Stoltz made their picks for the week and decided to go the top-10 route.
“I do think [Scheffler’s] going to win, but I’m not picking him here,” Knost said. “For me, my favorite golf bet of the week, I’m going a top-10 play. Give me Justin Thomas (+165). He likes this place a lot, I like where he’s at, he loves this golf course, loves this tournament. Finished runner-up in the desert at the American Express, going to have very similarly conditions this week. He’s not afraid of the crowd — he’s going to play well.”
Stoltz also made a top-10 play, going with Sahith Theegala (+400).
“I’m kind of going out on a limb; I love him,” Stoltz said. “He’s so fun to watch, love watching his short game.”
Theegala nearly won here in 2022 as a sponsor’s exemption, but he bogeyed the par-4 17th hole and missed out on a playoff by a shot. He tied for 39th at TPC Scottsdale the next year and was fifth last year.
