Lexi Thompson’s management team has taken to social media to clarify why Thompson decided to momentarily step away from the networking sites, citing “unwarranted commentary from social media abusers over time” and saying it wasn’t from one recent event or post.

Hours later LPGA commissioner Michael Whan tweeted in support of the star.

“In my 10 yrs @LPGA I can think of NO player that has attended more pro-am parties, signed more autographs & talked to more sponsors/fans than @Lexi,” Wahn wrote. “She’s an incredible athlete & ambassador. If taking a break from social media helps her, we should all support it!!!”

Thompson posted to her Instagram on Sunday alerting her 400,000-plus followers she would be taking a break from social media, saying “I’m too involved with it, and to read some of the hurtful things being said to me lately isn’t fair and I’m not dealing with it.”

She said her future posts would be from her management team, Blue Giraffe Sports, and the agency’s first post came on Wednesday afternoon.

“It has come to our attention that the reason for Lexi Thompson’s decision to take a break from Social Media has been taken out of context by various media outlets,” the post read. “Lexi’s decision was not based on a recent event or post, but rather from a culmination of harsh, hurtful, and unwarranted commentary from social media abusers over time.”

While Blue Giraffe Sports didn’t mention President Donald Trump, some media outlets reported Thompson’s break from social media was due directly to her round with the president. She played with Trump and Rush Limbaugh on April 19 but made no public comment about it afterward.

“Any news report that a recent event or situation led to her decision is completely false and erroneous,” her management team continued.

Thompson is in the field for this week’s LPGA Mediheal Championship, which begins today at Lake Merced Golf Club outside of San Francisco.

Statement from Blue Giraffe Sports on behalf of client Lexi Thompson: It has come to our attention that the reason for Lexi Thompson's decision to take a break from Social Media has been taken out of context by various media outlets. Lexi's decision was not based on a recent event or post, but rather from a culmination of harsh, hurtful, and unwarranted commentary from social media abusers over time. Lexi is aware that this is a constant problem for most people in the public spotlight, and she has always readily accepted that fact. Lexi is excited to compete in the LPGA Mediheal Championship this week in San Francisco and simply wanted to remove this negative variable on a temporary basis in order to focus on competing against the world's best. Any news report that a recent event or situation led to her decision is completely false and erroneous. Lexi wants to thank all of her fans and supporters for their continued outpouring of support and encouragement, and looks forward to being back very soon.
