Bryson DeChambeau won’t reveal putting secret that led to sudden success at 3M Open

July 6, 2019

Bryson DeChambeau is on fire at the inaugural 3M Open in Minnesota. But if you think he’s going to reveal the putting secret that has led to his success, you are sorely mistaken.

DeChambeau opened the tournament on Thursday with a stellar 66 before tearing up the TPC Twin Cities course on Friday for a 62. That left him at 14 under, good enough for a two-shot lead at the halfway point.

DeChambeau’s incredible round on Friday, the lowest PGA Tour round of his career, featured a whopping 137 feet of putts made. But when asked after the round what specific putting fix he found to spark his sudden mastery on the greens, Bryson refused to reveal his secret.

“The thing that has kind of changed that I’m not really going to tell. It’s a little secret,” DeChambeau told Golf Channel after the round. “But it’s definitely been through a lot of practice trial and error and a lot of struggle, too.”

Though he didn’t offer up his putting fix to his rivals and the many recreational golfers watching him this week, he did acknowledge that on-course struggles, and fighting through them, are what lead to the most important improvements in his game. For that ability to battle through the low moments and learn from them, DeChambeau has his family to thank.

“People don’t realize that struggle is what’s always going to make me better. That’s what I appreciate about myself and appreciate and about my family and my dad, because he told me never to give up, and those little points are going to make you better. So I really have to thank my family for that, and it’s made me a better person down the road, too, so it’s just a learning process, and I keep learning ever single day.”

So far this year, DeChambeau has failed to find the game that led to his breakthrough four-win campaign in 2018. However, after a low-point that saw him miss three-straight cuts in April and May, he finally seems to be rounding into form. He previewed his great play at the 3M Open with a T8 finish at the Travelers in his last start.

As for his primary focus over the final two rounds in search of his first win of the year, DeChambeau says that driving the ball will be the key.

“You’re not going to be perfect, but if I can keep driving it well just like I have been, and become more and more confident, that’s the Bryson we saw last year.”
