LPGA Tour player has a genius idea to keep from getting angry

June 3, 2019

One LPGA player has a trick that’s the golf equivalent of a child putting soap in their mouth after saying a swear word around their parents, and I am all on board.

It started last month, when Golfweek’s Beth Ann Nichols reported that Nanna Koerstz Madsen had come up with a brilliant new idea: Whenever Madsen gets annoyed and loses control of her emotions, she takes a (sour) bite of lemon to keep her in check.

The Danish pro has some reasoning behind the method. “It’s like taking your senses away from whatever you’re on and thinking about this lemon,” Madsen told Nichols, “which is really disgusting and not very nice.”

In a follow-up story from Golf Digest’s Christopher Powers, Madsen doubled down on the explanation:

“It is [gross], yeah. That’s why I’m doing this.”

Powers even grabbed a picture of the lemon Madsen put into play at the U.S. Women’s Open. Thankfully, she played so well on this occasion that she didn’t need them this time around.
