A simple tip to nail your setup every time

October 28, 2018

I see a lot of higher handicappers hunching over their short irons and standing too upright with their longer clubs. Bad idea. Your posture shouldn’t change from club to club.

Do this: Set the ball in the correct position in your stance based on the club you’re swinging. Next, sole the clubhead behind the ball. Then adjust your body to the club (not the ball). Keep the checkpoints below in mind as you make the adjustment and you’ll be perfect every time.

CHECKPOINT NO. 1

Tilt forward the same amount with every club. Adjust by standing closer to or farther from the ball.

CHECKPOINT NO. 2

Regardless of club, set your hands in the same place relative to your chest and thighs.

SETUP THOUGHT: “THIGH FIVE”

Figure out the distance between your grip and thighs that works best for you and stick to it. For me, it’s about a splayed hand’s width (see photo below). This is a great on-course checkpoint, too.
