Four steps for box jumps that will help you add more distance

July 28, 2019

Box jumps (yes, jumping onto a box) are a proven way to boost clubhead speed. Rory McIlroy’s great at them, and look at what he can do to a ball. The traditional box jump—onto a platform set directly in front of you—is great for basic leg strength. Jumping onto a platform placed to your side, however, also hones your ability to rotate and stay in posture. Here’s how it works. (For you box-jump newbies, it’s okay to ditch the platform until you feel more confident.)

Step 1: Stand to the side of a box or step with your feet shoulder-width apart. (Work in both directions during your training sessions.)

Step 2: Squat down with open palms facing forward.

Step 3: Jump laterally onto the box while simultaneously rotating your body (and your palms) toward the platform.

Step 4: As you land, make sure you do so evenly on both feet and in a soft and quiet manner. Work to maintain a solid posture, with your ears in line with your spine. As you become more comfortable with the jump, increase the height of the box.
