The 5 best fitness apps to help you stay active at home

Gyms and courses might be closed around the country, but the grind never stops. If you need to get a good workout in but don’t have access to the full accoutrement of fitness equipment you normally do, don’t worry:

I’ve chosen my five favorites below:

1. Nike Training Club App – Free

The Nike Training Club app is loaded with over 185 free on-demand workouts led by Nike’s Master Trainers. The app features a range of workouts that fit any routine, with options from beginner to advanced, low to high intensity, and durations from 15-90 minutes. You can choose from a number of programs, including yoga, mobility, strength training, cardio & HIT and specify the type of equipment you do (or don’t) have to narrow down your options. To compliment your efforts, the app also helps you build healthy habits with nutrition and wellness guidance from Nike’s Master Trainers. For golfers stuck inside, the Nike Training Club is a great way to stay or get into golf shape.

2. Peloton – $12.99/mo

Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need a fancy bike or treadmill to participate in a Peloton class. The Peloton app offers access to thousands of live and on-demand classes hosted by Peloton’s crop of expert instructors. Whether you’re looking for cardio, strength training, or want to take your workout outdoors, Peloton has everything you need. The app also gives you access to perfectly curated playlists for whatever workout you choose. Even better, they just extended the free trial period to 90 days so you can get your sweat on while practicing social distancing.

3. Aaptiv – $14.99/mo or $99/year

Aaptiv is the OG digital fitness app and offers access to boutique style fitness classes in the comfort of your own home. With over 2500 workouts available on-demand and 30 new workouts being added weekly, this app has everything you need to break a sweat. The classes cover 14 disciplines including guided running and elliptical workouts to strength training and yoga. You can even train for specific events with programs tailored to that goal, from 5Ks to full marathons. Aaptiv’s social component allows you to partner up with friends to take on challenges and offers the option of committing to longer programs if you don’t want to choose a workout each day.

4. Daily Burn – starting at $14.95/ mo

Daily Burn is a great app for at-home fitness, which we all need right now. The standard subscription costs $14.95/mo and gives you unlimited access to workout videos and new training programs. The premium subscription at $26.95/mo gets you access to the full archive of Daily Burn 365 workouts (a daily video that expires after 24 hours for a basic membership), an additional 600 workout videos called “fan favorites” and audio workouts. Daily Burn workouts are designed to be equipment free, and include programs for all skill levels and intensity levels. My Fitness Pal is a fitness app focused on dialing in your nutrition.

5. My Fitness Pal – Free

An Under Armour product, My Fitness Pal isn’t actually a fitness app — it’s a fitness tracking app. It focuses on helping you achieve your fitness goals by making it easy to track your nutrition and exercise. The built in food database features over 300 million items, and can accommodate almost any diet plan you might be following. You can set goals, be it weight loss, weight gain, or maintenance and see how your food intake and exercise output influence your decisions throughout the day. The app’s easy-to-use interface also syncs with several other apps including FitBit, to import your workout data and update your nutrition goals for the day in real time. This app is also extremely helpful in reminding you to drink enough water, something we could all do a better job of doing.
