Use this easy drill to add some serious clubhead speed to your game

Power is king in the modern age of golf. While there is still a faction of elite players who rely on artistry and shot-making, more and more of the top players have an extra gear to bomb the ball down the fairways.

Because of this fact, everyone is looking for an edge that will give them those extra 5 or 10 yards of distance off the tee. Luckily, you don’t have to take a Bryson DeChambeau approach to up your clubhead speed.

Take this drill from Mark Immelman, for example. It’s a drill as simple as they come, and it doesn’t require any powerlifting or brawny diets.

“This simple drill will help you store, load and release energy a whole lot quicker,” Immelman says. “It’s a wonderful feel.”

With any iron in your bag, take your regular grip and then split your hands so there are about six inches between the two. You won’t be able to hit any shots with a grip like this, but it will help you get the feel for proper loading in the arms and wrists for extra power.

Next, start your takeaway and hinge your wrists on the way back. From this position with the split grip, you will have the proper feeling of getting into a powerful position at the top of your backswing.

Now, start your downswing and hold the hinge in your wrists until you get to impact, where you will release with some extra power, re-hinging as you complete your swing.

“Once you have the feeling, go ahead and incorporate that into your swing,” Immelman says. “You will feel the speed.”
