Looking to add some distance to your tee shots this summer? Try this method from GOLF Top 100 Teacher V.J. Trolio.

You think you load up on your backswing, but, from my seat, most recreational players simply turn back while never really engaging the ground beneath their feet, which is what truly creates leverage, a solid windup and the torque creation you see in a Tour player’s swing.

Try this: At the range, place two balls on the ground in addition to the one you plan to hit. Set one ball behind your trail foot and one ball in front of it. The two extra balls are your guides for more torque.

The feeling you’re after is that, as you rotate to the top, you have momentum going toward the ball in front of you while you get your trail hip moving toward the one behind you.

It’s like a clock: force toward the 6 o’clock position (the forward force move) and a turn to the 12 o’clock position as you rotate your pelvis. Combining these two moves as you swing to the top is how you actually load your body to generate speed and power on the backswing.

Every big hitter does it.
