Lifting your arms may help you hit the occasional bomb, but you’ll hit everything else into the weeds. Reel in a wild windup by
1) turning your upper body until your left shoulder swings under your chin,
2) letting your elbows turn with your torso, and
3) getting your hands as far away from your right ear as possible (no left-arm collapse).
Once you feel your left arm collapse or your right elbow fly out behind you, you’re toast. Getting either elbow above your chest removes any structure from your backswing— and invites a slice.
Get your hands as far away from your right ear as possible. Combined, these moves give your backswing structure, with your elbows close to level.
