This drill uses a downhill lie to help you hit better iron shots

Go ahead and stand up if you’re constantly searching for the secret to hitting better iron shots. OK, now that many of us are out of our seats, let’s dive into a simple way that every golfer can improve that part of their game.

In the video above, GOLF Top 100 Teacher Carol Preisinger utilizes an easy drill that’s perfect for getting the most out of your irons. It’s especially important for newer golfers, who may struggle with hitting the ball cleanly and generating height. This is often due to the fact that many beginners aren’t used to shifting their weight and swinging down on the golf ball.

But Preisinger offers a simple solution, which will help golfers “practice this feel and this sequence.”

“Find a downhill lie, take a wedge,” Preisinger says. “You’re going to feel yourself shifting into your target side. You want to feel the club swinging down the slope. If you can do this with a wedge and get that ball up in the air, it’s going to boost your confidence on a level lie anywhere on the golf course.”

By practicing with a wedge on a downhill lie, the clubface will flatten, allowing for a purer shot. By applying this same motion when hitting iron shots, you’ll see better contact and get the loft you’re looking for. Give it a try and see what it does to your iron game.
