PGA Championship 2019: Tiger Woods’ first round got off to a nightmarish start
FARMINGDALE, N.Y — The first day of a major championship. The sun is out and Tiger Woods, fresh off his 15th (still feels good to type that) major win is on the tee. Good times here at Bethpage Black… but that didn’t last.
That’s right. After taking Wednesday off to rest-up following a big lead-up to the event, Tiger stepped onto the 10th tee at Bethpage Black, his first of the day, and promptly made a double-bogey 6 to drop to two over through one hole.
It started with the drive. Not terrible, but a cut that just crept away from him and snuck into the rough.
The drive wasn’t a major issue, though. He pitched out and left himself 105 yards for his third shot. That’s when he made his worst error of the hole — pumping his wedge long of the green.
To make matters worse, he compounded that error by chipping onto the green and then missed an 8 footer for bogey.
Not the start he would’ve envisioned, but he did go onto birdie the difficult 15th hole to pull one back before heading into the comparatively easier front nine. Follow Woods’ entire round here.
