In a surprising twist, TaylorMade is taking its previously Tour-only MG proto wedge (that was released last month at the Memorial) and releasing it to the public in limited quantities.
The company announced the exclusive release of the new wedge in two grinds on their website and confirmed a few details about the prototype, which was added to five players’ bags in its first week on Tour.
MG Proto is the first fully forged wedge the company has released under the Milled Grind, which is coming to the end of its third generation.
With the limited drop, the wedge is available in two new grinds for TaylorMade: the SX and SC grinds.
The SX was immediately gamed in Tommy Fleetwood’s 60-degree lob wedge. It is the widest sole offering in the MG lineup and has an increased sole curvature to help the club glide through the turf regardless of conditions. At the rear of the sole, it has TaylorMade’s “Reverse-C” trailing edge which is designed to offer consistent trailing edge relief no matter the position of the wedge. It also features slightly more offset to help players feel more square to the target.
The SC grind was played by Ben Griffin at the Memorial when he finished second to Scottie Scheffler. It has a more cambered sole and C-shaped grind to enhance versatility for players who like to hit a variety of different shots.
In addition to the raw finish, both wedges feature laser-etched Spin Tread technology to help maintain spin out of the rough and in wet conditions.
The current MG4 wedge was released in the summer of 2023, and the family has typically done a two-year product cycle. But as of now, TaylorMade has yet to confirm whether the MG Proto will eventually become the next generation MG5.
The TaylorMade MG Proto wedges are available today exclusively on TaylorMadeGolf.com. Each wedge is $199 and comes stock with a Dynamic Gold Wedge 115g shaft and Golf Pride Z Plus 2 Grip, but can be customized. Both grinds are available in 58- and 60-degree lofts.
