It used to be that having a “chipper” club in your bag came with a stigma — it was an admission that you struggle around the greens.
But this is a new era, where golfers are getting smarter about scoring and open to new ways of going low. A chipper can be a useful tool in a player’s bag and Odyssey is adding a new option with their latest Chipper.
With this iteration, which the company is calling its best yet, Odyssey is taking inspiration from the success Callaway has had in their popular UW and fairway-wood releases by incorporating the same step sole technology to enhance turf interaction.
While a shot hit with a chipper and a shot hit with a fairway wood are obviously very different, both are hit with a fairly shallow angle of attack. That’s why using the same sole design as a fairway wood can be useful, since the whole goal of a chipper is to loft a ball up in the air easily and predictably anyway.
Oydssey designers also borrowed from metalwood design for the new chipper when it comes to the shaping, coming up with an oval, hybrid-like shape to inspire confidence over the ball. Oftentimes chippers can take on a more putter-like form, which can make it difficult for beginners and other players to think the ball will get in the air. But looking down at the new Chipper offers a friendlier appearance with its rounded shape.
Interestingly, from certain angles, the shaping begins to resemble a traditional wedge, which is probably what designers were going for as well.
Lastly, the latest Chipper will come standard with a longer grip to allow it to be used from a variety of lie and for different shots without a player worrying about having to grip down to the steel of the shaft.
