Kids will love the new Vice Golf Junior collection (and so will parents)

I have been saying this for a long time, but golf clubs for kids has been a completely overlooked market.

Yes, there are options — U.S. Kids is probably the most active in that space; Ping does a great job; Cobra, even Callaway and TaylorMade have taken an honest crack at it — but ultimately it’s a part of the market that needs a refresher.

In the past, kids options would be a cut-down version of an adult’s club (that’s how I learned). I had a cut-down Spalding Tour Edition that my uncle got for me from the local PGA professional, and while it was great it’s obviously not ideal when you’re 12. If you walk into any big box store these days, there are junior sections but they are usually buried in the back of the stores and for the most part there is no real “kids fitting” platforms prevalent in the market. That’s where I’d like to see things change. It’s an untapped source of new golfers and like anything else, if you make it fun, the kids will follow.

That brings us to this week, where direct-to-consumer favorite Vice Golf has thrown its hat into the kiddo ring and I gotta say — I love it. At a baseline, it’s fun. Although I’m not going to do a technology breakdown or benefits spiel here. To be fair to all the participants in this category, they all do what’s best for the junior golfer. The clubs are all designed to get the ball up, they are lighter so the player can take a hard rip, and all the kits are kid-centric, which is most important.

Point is, golf at an introductory stage for the kids has to be fun because, well, golf is hard.

Vice Golf’s Junior line has some variety to it, and the clubs are offered at a very “fun” price point, ranging from $249-369. Here are your options.

TOUR JUNIOR (Ages 6–8, Height 44″–49″ /111–122 cm )

PRO JUNIOR v1 (Ages 7–10, Height 49″–53″/123–134 cm)

PRO JUNIOR v2 (Ages 9–12, Height 54″–58″ / 135–146 cm)

Vice even offers a golf balls for kids that is lower compression and built for launch and feel. Kids will have fun if they can hit it high and chip it close, so we don’t need an 8-year-old worried about north-to-south dispersion. (Except my 8-year-old, who’ve I demanded he become the No. 1 player in the world by the time he’s 18 because his old man is a hack and I’m living vicariously through him.)

Regardless of what’s happening in my household, I can honestly say that after having received sets for both of my boys (ages 8 and 12) I love the make-up of the sets, the quality of the whole kit and the first session on the driving range was a smashing success. It was easy for both of them to understand the sets, which is big, but even more they loved how easy it was to get the ball up in the air.

Both kids have the golf bug, which means a justified game revival for myself. (It’s a lot easier to sneak off to the course on a Saturday if you bring the kids with ya.) There is definitely a method to my madness.
