Tony Finau brings a touch of class to the WMPO: Obsession of the Week

February 4, 2020

Welcome to a new column, Obsession of the Week, where we’re going to highlight one thing that caught our eye in golf over the weekend. Whether it’s Tiger’s shoes, Lexi’s headcover or a limited-edition Masters item, we’ll walk you through what it is and where you can get it. This week, it’s more like obsessions because the guys on Tour dressed to impress at the Waste Management Phoenix Open.

The Waste Management Phoenix Open always features some of the most creative and fun fashion, gear and accessories on Tour as players and caddies feed into the party-like atmosphere. From a cute matching moment during the star studded pro-am to Tony Finau’s awesome Friday “fit” by Nike, we couldn’t keep our eyes from feasting on the amazing things we saw this week.

Let’s get started with Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher and hometown hero Archie Bradley and his father suited up in matching outfits (right down to their beards) from Devereux. This performance and golfwear company was founded by two brothers who are bringing fashion and comfort to the course and beyond with high-end, versatile men’s apparel.

Bradley and his father channeled the desert vibes in the Sonora polo, and brought a wholesome father-son moment to the raucous WMPO. This polo is perfect for those hot-weather rounds since it’s made from a sweat-wicking performance fabric, and it adds some whimsy to the often plain polo with the cactus pattern.

While the Bradleys made a statement during the pro-am, the best thing to come out of the Waste Management Phoenix Open was Tony Finau’s Friday fit. Finau sported a classic look in a navy blue Nike cardigan and white Jonoski G golf shoes.

Nike’s Dri-FIT Player cardigan is an updated take on a classic. With modern tech, including Nike’s Dri-FIT material to keep you cool and dry, this cardigan lends a touch of class to anyone’s golf wardrobe. The cardigan also features a mesh panel along the spine for additional air flow and flexibility as you rotate through your swing. It comes in two neutral colors, which means you can pair it with polos of any color or pattern to keep your on-course style fresh at all times.

The cardigan as an item of clothing seems to be making a comeback among Tour pros including Kevin Na, who sported one a few weeks ago at the American Express, and with good reason. It’s a classic mid-weight layer that’s easy to put on and take off, but also lends a touch of old-school, Palmer-esque style to any look. And what golfer doesn’t want to channel Arnold Palmer?

Finau’s shoes, while clearly custom in terms of the green swoosh to compliment the event’s color scheme, completed his unassuming yet sophisticated outfit. He sported Nike’s Jonoski G spikeless(!) golf shoes, which come in a variety of classic color combinations you CAN purchase here.

The beauty of Finau’s outfit is that it is a clinic in how to take your style from course to street without ever having to change. The cardigan and shoes can easily be worn to post-round drinks, out for dinner, to the grocery store or even at your 9-5 day job.

So do yourself a favor and start thinking smarter, not harder about the versatility of your on-course wardrobe.
