There are some pros who like to switch putters weekly or even between rounds of an event (Looking at you, Hideki!). But there are many more who stick with a club once they find one that works, like Viktor Hovland.
Hovland’s Ping PLD DS72 Hovi Proto had been the only putter he’d used for the entirety of his PGA Tour career (a rarity today even for the hardest switching pros) until earlier this year when he tried out a new Ping Onset prototype putter at the Genesis.

The change was short-lived. While the results didn’t pan out immediately for the 2023 FedEx Cup champion — Hovland missed three straight cuts, including the Genesis — it turns out the gamer only needed to feel threatened to get back into shape.
Going back to the DS72, which was known simply as the Hovi Proto until Ping finally launched it at retail under the DS72 designation, Hovland was second in the field in strokes gained: putting at the Valspar Championship, picking up more than 7.3 shots on the field with the flat stick. That helped him clip Justin Thomas by a shot for his first victory since that FedEx Cup title.
Think you want to try the same wand as Hovland? Ping offers the PLD Milled SE DS72 Hovland edition and it’s available on Fairway Jockey.

This is a special edition offering mirroring Hovland’s persimmon finish. It comes with a special edition black and orange PLD grip and a matching black and orange headcover, paying homage to Hovland’s Oklahoma State Sooners.
If you’d like to customize the DS72 to better meet your own specs, you could also opt for the standard PLD DS72 or try out the recently released Ping Scottsdale line, which features the DS72 shape.
