SPOTTED: Scotty Cameron 2020 Special Select Tour Prototype putters at the Sony Open

January 9, 2020

Keeping up with what is now a yearly tradition, Scotty Cameron introduced Tour prototype putters and a new Hula Girl putter cover in Hawaii at the 2020 Sony Open.

Cameron took to Instagram to show off the new “Special Select Tour Prototypes” that were introduced to Tour players at Waialae Country Club on the island of Oahu. For now, they’re just prototypes, but they could give a sneak peek to what the Scotty Cameron Select putter replacements might look like.

The new prototype putters exhibit Scotty Cameron’s iconic red “cherry” dots, but they have a different arrangement than usual. Typically, Scotty Cameron putters display either a single red dot, or they have a row of three matching-sized dots in a row. The new 2020 Special Select Tour Prototypes, however, have an almost celestial red-dot layout, featuring dots of different sizes.

Although Scotty Cameron has not revealed much about the new putters, it’s clear from the photos that the putters are milled, with milling marks all over the back cavities, faces, and up into the hosel. They also look to be available to Tour players in several different Newport and mallet models, each appearing to have one-piece faces, rather than face inserts.

Written on the upper portion of the back cavities, it says “Tour Type SSS.” The SSS stands for “Studio Stainless Steel,” or at least it has in the past.

To keep the putters safe, Scotty Cameron also unveiled a new Hula Girl headcover for 2020, which is an ode to the local Hawaiian culture. They bring a big smile to Justin Thomas’ face, or maybe that smile is still lingering from his 2020 Sentry Tournament of Champions win last week at Kapalua.
