The Sigma 2 putter series from Ping ($215-$235 MSRP) is available in 10 options, all of which come with two new innovations — an adjustable-shaft-length technology that allows for simple custom tuning, and dual-durometer face inserts.
The face insert, called PEBAX, is comprised of a softer front layer and a firmer rear layer. For shorter putts, the softer front material comes into play by improving touch and precision while the firmer rear layer helps enhance distance control and consistency on longer strokes.
The effectiveness of the new insert is amped up by Ping’s proven TR face design, which reduces speed loss on off-center hits for greater overall consistency of speed and distance.
“The Sigma 2 putters are engineered to bring a new level of performance and excitement to our putter line,” said John K. Solheim, Ping President. “As we do with every product, we combined our extensive technical knowledge gathered over our nearly 60-year history with the needs of the everyday golfer. In the Sigma 2, along with the new face design that’s both very soft and responsive, this approach includes providing golfers the ability to customize their shaft length by introducing a simple and intuitive adjustable-shaft-length technology that is a standard feature of every putter in the line. Our research indicates eight out of 10 golfers are playing the wrong-length putters and losing strokes as a result. That’s a staggering statistic to us and one we’ve made easy for golfers to solve with the Sigma 2. Golfers will see significant improvement in their putting consistency if they use a putter length customized to their game.”
The new adjustable shaft design, which conforms to USGA rules, allows players to alter the length of the Sigma 2 putter quickly and easily from 32″ to 36″ with a tool that inserts into the top of the grip. A full rotation of the tool lengthens or shortens the shaft by ¼” while the grip itself stays square to the face at all times.
According to Ping’s R&D department, approximately eight of 10 golfers play a putter that’s the wrong length for their stroke, making the new technology something that can potentially benefit the majority of players who don’t necessarily light it up on the greens.
All of the new Sigma 2 putters are available with a choice of three Ping pistol grip options (PP60, PP61, PP62), which offer a range of weights, sizes, and shapes to fit a wide variety of players.
