Long putters have recently seen a resurgence on the PGA Tour, with players like Lucas Glover and Byeong Hun An joining long-timer Adam Scott in the long putter club. This change has had both players seeing big improvements to their putting stats and performance to go along with it, especially for Glover who has had back-to-back wins.
Beyond the specs and obvious technique change, what makes a long putter unique is the longer two-piece grip rather than a standard single one-piece rubber or polymer grip that standard-length putters use.
These two-piece grips take some extra work to install properly and because of this, we wanted to make sure you have and knowledge to change one yourself.
Top tips for changing a long putter grip
Similar to French cooking and the use of butter, when it comes to installing a long putter grip you can’t use too much solvent. With a longer length to travel to get the bottom portion into position, you need to make sure the inside of the grip and the two-sided tape is fully saturated.
To piggyback off of the first tip, if this is going to be your first time installing a long putter grip, try and have an extra on hand. Getting the bottom portion of the grip into the right position can be tricky, which once again goes back to my first point — be sure to use lots of grip solvent.

With some long putters using graphite shafts, the final part of the process where you remove the extra tape between the bottom and top grips requires some care to make sure you don’t mark the shaft with the blade. And once again, like with cooking, having a sharp and precise knife will make this step easier and prevent having to use extra force to cut through the tape.
So with a little practice and a few extra steps, you can be a long putter re-grip specialist in no time.
