Roll Model: Bryson DeChambeau is setting trends on the green

May 25, 2019

Bryson DeChambeau’s single-length irons haven’t caught on, but his putter has piqued the interest of players and manufacturers.

Bubba Watson and Adam Scott gave DeChambeau’s arm-lock putting method a shot during competition, while Odyssey and KBS rolled out putter-specific shafts on the heels of DeChambeau’s success with a graphite version made by LA Golf. “It’s all about finding an edge out here, so you’d be crazy to not try something that’s working for [Bryson],” one top-50 player told me.

Whatever It Takes: Some people go to great lengths to ensure the best players in the world have the correct gear. Just ask Michael Johnson, Piretti Golf’s founder, who fielded a call from Tony Finau with a request to test one of the company’s putters with more loft.

There was just one problem: Finau was in the Bahamas at Tiger’s tournament. Johnson grabbed three putters and booked a red-eye flight from Houston that touched down in Nassau 30 minutes before Finau teed off. That’s dedication.
