If frustration with your putting has you throwing up your hands over every missed putt, you may be a candidate for a complete putting overhaul.
Plenty of players have added a new flatstick into the mix in an effort to jump-start their confidence on the green, but what about incorporating a different style of putter and stroke? If you’re ready to make a significant change to your game around the green, a broomstick-style putter could make a difference.
What is a broomstick putter? A broomstick putter has a significantly longer shaft then a regular putter, enabling you to stand more upright over the ball to make a sweeping stroke. For some players, this can increase good contact and enhance stability, leading to more made putts.

They key to getting comfortable with a broomstick putter, says GOLF Top 100 Teacher Jason Baile, is deciding on your grip. Then, once you get used to the idea of using a longer backstroke and shorter follow-through, you’ll be good to go.
High-profile players on Tour who have put the broomstick in play successfully include Lucas Glover and Akshay Bhatia, both of whom are in this week’s BMW Championship field.
“It’s been, it’s just basically a whole new motor skill, a whole new brain function because it’s so different, so out there from what I was doing,” Glover said of making the switch to a broomstick in 2023.
